2008 AICIP Build

This PC is planned to replace current AICIP server around Apr-May 2008. It is in line with upcoming next long term support (LTS) of Ubuntu 8.04 release.

  1. inspect power supply, the Antec Sonata III 500 come with a PSU that can automatically adjust 120v-240v. So I don't need to worry about that.
  2. open case, and replace I/O shield with the one coming with motherboard
  3. install CPU, inspect the CPU socket closely, the two corners lower left have one missing pin point, and that is where the golden arrow should be, and that is how you ensure the alignment is correct.
  4. install CPU fan: you are suppose to position the narrow groove toward outside, then push down 4 fasteners to secure it. The Intel default fan gave me lots of trouble, the fasteners won't align properly: diagnal alignment is no help: as soon as you put one in place, the other side just won't fasten. Using a bit more force. It 'seems' push two (diagonal) at the same time make it a bit easier.
  5. must also remember connect CPU fan cable to connector, which is very near to the CPU socket.
  6. install graphic card, there is nothing special about it, the case has two x16 PCI express slots. I use the orange slot as suggested. There is no additional power connection needed for this card.
  7. install memory: DDR2 memory needs to be in pairs. There are 4 memory slots, two orange and two blacks. Unfortunately, I got a pair of bad memory, and the ending results is after I assembled everything, no beep and no POST. In retrospect, at this point after I installed the memory and connect the power and video card, I should do a out-of-box test and see if POST comes on.
  8. connect power: there are two cables we need to connect: a 24-pin power that is to be connected to a wide connector at the edge (south of memory bank). Another 4-pin power pin needs to be connected to a 4-pin connector close to the CPU socket. See MOBO for details.
  9. since the basic stuff suppose to be working, we now install motherboard: there are total 9 standoff to screw in, as along as you make sure I/O panel stick out a bit and hold into place, there should be no problem aligning all 9 holes.
  10. install hard drive: I have choosen to make connector face away: which means I need to connect both power cable and data cable before I put the hard drive in place.
  11. install dvd drive, Samsung SH-203 has a SATA power (wide) and SATA data interface (narrow), and they are side by side to each other. Connect the power cable first, then use one SATA data cable provided by ASUS motherboard and connect to SATA 1 (master)
  12. connect system panel: power LED, HD LED, reset, power, speaker.
  13. connect mp3-in module, extra USB port, extra IEEE 1934a.

  • CPU: must works with LG775. They say it Intel Quad-core ready.
  • You can update your BIOS here.
  • Memory: I have used all 4 memory banks. The only way to expand this is to replace a pair of 1GB memory with a pair of 2GB. That gives you 2G+4G=6GB; or if you replace it with 2 pairs of 2GB, then you have 8GB memory. You can use DDR2-533, DDR2-667, DDR2-800, these are all 240pin memory. Extra Note: PC2-6400 means DDR2-800, probably should stick to this speed to match the CPU.
  • Expansion slots: you have one x16 PCI express, x1 PCI, 3 PCI slots there, but the junk with mp3, usb, IEEE 1394 are occupying the space. You can get rid of them if you want to.
  • Drive: you have one external 5.25in, two external 3.5in, and 3 internal 3.5in drive slots available. Use SATA interface when possible. The Ultra ATA hard drive in primary master IDE is an honest mistake.
