Lecture Overview

Sensor networks provide the last missing link between human beings and the physical world, making it easier for us to monitor the environment and react upon it. Although potentially powerful, sensor networks have presented unique challenges to many aspects of network design and information processing, including the scalability challenge, the reliability challenge, the dynamics challenge, and the energy challenge, among which the major constraint to individual sensor performance is energy. The focus of this lecture series is collaborative processing. Since individual sensors have limited resources, collaboration becomes the key to successful deployment of applications. Although we will cover various research topics, they all fall into one of the three themes: How to collaborate? Who to collaborate? And Where and What to collaborate.

Hairong Qi received her Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 1999, B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from Northern JiaoTong University, Beijing, P. R. China in 1992 and 1995 respectively. She is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her current research projects are in the areas of collaborative processing in sensor networks, hyperspectral image analysis, and automatic target recognition. Dr. Qi is the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award. She has published over 100 technical papers in archival journals and refereed conference proceedings, including a co-authored book in Machine Vision. Dr. Qi's research is supported by NSF, DARPA, Office of Naval Research, Department of Homeland Security etc. Dr. Qi is a senior member of IEEE and a member of Sigma Xi.
